The Fogarty International Center (FIC) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will hold a three-day research training institute on household air pollution (HAP) from October 9-12, 2012, at FIC's Center for Global Health Studies (CGHS) on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The HAP training institute is being organized in collaboration with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and the U.S. Agency for International Development.

The USAID supported TRAction Project and Unicef are co-funding researchers from Johns Hopkins University to carry out a one year, multi-country and global policy analysis of Integrated Community Case Management (iCCM) of childhood illness and newborn care in order to identify facilitating factors and barriers for iCCM policy reform and program development.

Half of the world’s population cooks with solid fuels on poorly functioning stoves or open fires, primarily using wood or other biomass. Nearly 2 million people, mostly women and children, die each year as a consequence of household air pollution levels that are typically 100 times greater than World Health Organization air quality guidelines.

Disrespectful and Abusive Treatment of Women During Childbirth, an article by URC staff members Sarah Whitmarsh and Maura Gaughan, was recently published in the online Global Health Magazine. The article describes the long-neglected abuse and disrespect many women face while receiving childbirth care in both developing and developed countries.
