The Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) in Kenya have been classified as disadvantaged areas with inequitable distribution of national resources, infrastructure and access to essential social services including healthcare. The maternal mortality rate (MMR) is estimated at over 600 per 100,000 live births compared to the national average of 488 per 100,000 live births. The under-five mortality rate is as high as 220 deaths per 1000 live births compared to the national average of 77 per 1000 live births.

TRAction Project is working on a study to improve health equity for nomadic populations in Magadi, Samburu and Turkana communities. TRAction is working with the Ministry of Health and other partners to promote respectful maternity care and address disrespect and abuse of women during facility based birth.
